LOCAL YOUTHS RECEIVE COLLEGE SAVINGS BONDS AS REGIONAL SPELLING BEE WINNERS!
(Bend, OR) – The High Desert Education Service District and Horizon Broadcasting Group teamed up for the third annual Central Oregon Regional Spelling Bee and awarded $4,000 in college savings bonds to four divisional winners.
Hayli Brown of Park Ridge Elementary in Redmond won the kindergarten through third grade division. Alexander Bartels of High Lakes Elementary in Bend was the fourth through fifth grade division winner. Adam Cash from Sisters Middle School repeated as the sixth through eighth grade division champion and Madeline Newvold of Redmond High School won the ninth through twelfth grade division.
Each received a $1,000 college savings bond, presented by Community First Bank, Trimble & Everton CPA, Century Insurance Group and Horizon Broadcasting Group. The runner up in each division received a $125 college savings bond from Central Oregon Family News. To date, the Regional Spelling Bee has awarded $12,500 to students in Central Oregon.
“We’re proud of all of the spellers that took part in the third annual Central Oregon Regional Spelling Bee,” said Marlene Amaral, Spelling Bee Coordinator for the High Desert Education Service District. “And we can’t thank the business community enough for stepping forward to recognize and reward the students for their outstanding academic accomplishments.”
Students advanced to the Regional Spelling Bee by winning their school spelling competition. 80 students competed in the four divisional bees, representing the Bend-LaPine School District, Redmond School District, Crook County School District, Sisters School District and Jefferson County School District.
The Regional Spelling Bee was conducted February 10, 2007 at Summit High School in Bend and will be broadcast on KQAK-FM, THE PEAK 104.1 and LITE 95.1 on February 11, 2007 (4:00 pm).
